There's a vein of PC that runs through even the hardest of them. It's an old world superiority complex, that seems to manifest itself as multi-cultural moral indignation. The idea that mass immigration has destroyed their culture, or worse, that the self-evident moral correctness of modern British (multi-)culture is unable to force peaceful co-existence among the less civilized tribes in the former Empire, simply does not compute. They don't get it.
It's like trying to convince Americans that beer, boobs and barbecue aren't all that great. All you'll get are blank looks.
The Brit soldiers are more tough and conservative than their civvie fellows, but they're still reflexively programmed to blame themselves for a lack of tolerance and understanding, rather than hold everyone to the same standards.

I suppose that like the Hebrews who fled from Pharoah’s grasp, the English refugees will have to spend a long time “in the wilderness” before they get their old souls back. Time will tell. They can bend over backwards infinitely. At one point, like a reed, they must snap back.
