I would agree that rock hit its high water mark in the early to mid 1980s. Its been all down hill since, and with the death of good old MTV videos, so died “rock”. Replaced by POP and that genre is hard to nail down because it varies so much with pop culture and ethnic influences, such as rap and hip hop. I could count on one hand pop songs that I like made after 1990.

Country fared much better and took off in the 1990s and became popular with the under 30 crowd, which it hasn't been able to do in the 60s and 70s

What people call “Country” today really isn’t much different than what we called “Soft Rock” in the 70s, I think of bands like, say, Firefall, and other bands of a similar vein.

The Mid 80s was a low point. Unless you’re thinking of early stuff from famous bands, or other indie stuff.
