I didn’t realize Korea had the mountains or snow necessary to host winter games. Those things on MASH just look like little Southern California hills.

As a peninsula jutting off the northern end of the Asian mainland, it is affected by the mainland weather in the winter - ground frozen like a rock, and the ocean-current weather streams in the summer - monsoons. In such a small place it has four very distinct, and extremely different seasons.
The South Korean topography is predominately tons of small mountains and valleys and not a ton of flat lands. I am not sure how high its highest mountains are, or where their ski areas are located, but apparently the Olympic committee does.
