Celebrating Independence Day, according to John Quincy Adams' father, John, is a natural consequence of the "stupendous" events of 1776.

Who better can provide us a description of that glorious day's significance when the men of 1776 signed the Declaration of Independence than John Quincy Adams who summarized it just a few decades later?

Included in these excerpts are a few of his comments on the Constitution also. Suggest a reading of this entire speech between now and Constitution Day in September 2011.

John Quincy Adams was a disappointment to his Federalist handlers. He was a better President than his father, for sure. Charles Dickens visited him on the floor of the House as they were literary pen pals, a side of him that few were aware of. He kept a diary/journal from age 12 until his death which makes for some very interesting reading. Screwed up as he was (who wouldn’t be with parents like John and Abigail) he was a very moral, albeit troubled, man. Of the first seven Presidents only two served just one term...John and John Quincy, Adams.
