Gunrunner was an attempt to develop enough gun-running evidence to bring down a cartel, and instead supplied thousands of arms to drug cartels locked in a life-or-death struggle with a key U.S. ally and trading partner.

I still believe that this was an attempt by the government to implicate legal gun sales in drug cartel murders, thus trying to justify more regulations and restrictions on gun ownership inside the US. Chasing after the drug cartels was secondary at most.

I agree. There’s nothing the ATF would like more than to severely restrict or even prohibit private gun ownership.

And to demoralize AZ to boot.

Napolitano (the anti-Arizona Arizonan) is likely in on this as well.

That’s EXACTLY what this was all about. They had a narrative that they wanted to prove but didn’t have the facts so they tried to create them.

I agree. Chasing cartels was never the real goal - justifying regulations was. Prior to this getting out, we were starting to see stories about how easy it was for Mexicans to get guns from the US. Little did we know that it was easy because the ATF was making it so.

This was an attempt to justify destruction of the second amendment. Our national socialist party doesn't like an armed populace for obvious reasons.

Yep, the idea that these cartels needed these guns in particular is ludicrous - they have the money and contacts to get the same or better weapons at cheaper prices from around the world. Another Freeper pointed out that it made no sense for the cartels to spend so much money on these guns ($500 for an AK) and couldn't figure out why they did it.

But what if the cartels actually made a deal with the Obama administration to buy and use the guns. Then Obama uses the resulting carnage to attack gun rights in the US, and pays the catels by looking the other way when drugs get imported, or when dealers could be arrested.

Karl, you have hit the nail directly on the head! This was a two edged covert op...both edges sinister in their inception...guns to the drug cartels stupid...blame the US NRA and the second amendment for the whole damn problem of the resulting mahime priceless...

The left is always subverting the truth of intent...never can their ideas stand up to real and rational informed citizens!!! never!!!

No. All the gun dealers were in on it with the ATF. It was the higher-ups who wouldn’t allow any arrests or interdiction of the straw buyers that caused the agents to blow the whistle. Many of the gun dealers complained that nothing was being done to stop obvious potential crime and they wanted out of the operation.

BINGO!!!....WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!!!!!!

It was a secret attack on the 2nd amendment...Pure and Simple....

There has been NO plausible explanation of how giving up the guns could have possibly brought down the drug cartels...Nada!
