He was born in a public hospital in Colon, Panama.

But it doesn’t matter - the Canal Zone always was, and still is, Panamanian sovereign soil. We leased the Canal Zone and operated it administratively - we never owned it outright.

There have been many Freepers, born in the Canal Zone, who’ve posted here that they have always known that they are not eligible to be President. For the record, neither is John McCain.

Not settled law. Senate resolution 511 passed saying he was, including a joint legal opinion by Tribe and Olson. The Senate had no business passing such a resoultion, but McCain was nominated and on the ballot without a challenge from the Dems or the GOP.

The issue needs to go to SCOTUS for resolution. Anything else is mere speculation.

“We leased the Canal Zone and operated it administratively - we never owned it outright.”

Not true. That is a total misinformed and misconception. And please don’t try arguing with someone who was born here and continues to live here.

We the taxpayers bought every square inch of the Canal Zone.

Every square inch belonged to the U.S.

Jimmmy Carter decided to give our property away.

...the Canal Zone always was, and still is, Panamanian sovereign soil.

I beg to differ on that one. It was always considered a United States possession, akin to Guam or American Samoa. It sent delegates to the major party national conventions. If you look at old maps, you will see the Canal Zone denoted in a contrasting color to surrounding Panama, and denoted as "Canal Zone (U. S.)." Furthermore, McCain's original long form birth certificate was issued by the "Panama Canal Health Department" and is entirely in English. (All official Panamanian documents would have naturally been in Spanish.)

If you say that Canal Zone was always "Panamanian sovereign soil," you are buying the Carter Administration's argument that returning the Zone and the Canal to the Panamanians made no difference at all.

For the record, neither is John McCain.

Of course he's ineligible. SOB didn't have a chance of getting enough votes, which is another, smaller requirement to be President. Mickey Mouse would have beaten McCain.

That's simply not true. Stop repeating disproven internet rumors as if they were fact.
