The draft was a form of slavery which was tolerated during times of real national danger since if we ever lost something like WW-II, we'd all be slaves more or less. The lesson of Nam, which was never codified into law but has been made practice, was that you cannot draft the boy next door and tell him that it's somehow or other his patriotic duty to go into harm's way over some sort of a stupid game.
