You can freeze both blackberries and raspberries...mulberries too for that matter.
I can lots of jam and jelly, taught myself and it is not really difficult. However, if you would like to preserve them, you can very EASILY make “freezer” jam. Sure-jell (the pectin used to thicken jams and jellies) has instructions here:
http://www.kraftrecipes.com/recipes/30-minutes-homemade-surejell-50137.aspx
The one listed is for strawberry...but just keep scrolling down and you will get to the others. For the most part, you could use blackberries, mulberries, and raspberries nearly interchangeably in those recipes; or even combine them if you end up with odd amounts...I have done just that many times. Raspberry/mulberry turned out great...mulberry/strawberry did as well.
The jam keeps for a year in the freezer. Like I said, I usually actually “can” so it is shelf stable...but I’ve had freezer jam before and while a bit different in consistency it was good! And, it’s a great way to use up some “free” nature’s bounty and have it last through the year.
Salt’s gone up, there is a shortage from rubbing it in our wounds.
A lot of Aldi’s merchandise is priced lower than Wal-Mart. We shop Aldis first and then get what we didn’t find there at Wal-Mart.
I read what is intended not what is typed. I hate the FR spelling and grammar nazis.
Just yesterday I picked up a gallon of milk for...FREE. Also last Autumn they had $2 coupons for ANY SIZE of Lactaid milk. Soooo...I got them in the quart sizes. Quarts were only $2.19 each which meant only 76 cents per gallon. I stocked up as much as my refrigerator (and freezer) could hold.
Yep Obama likes to rub salt in our wounds. When we are hopeless he will save us all with a global currency and global communism.
bump that link. Thanks. I will go read it.
Yeah it got to the point of a poster scanning and posting their grocery store receipt in this thread. Like we don’t have enough to worry about than ridiculous arguing over my state your state.
LOL!
Thanks. I also can’t stand the posters that when I posted a ‘I LOST MY JOB’ thread and of course said my boss was a rich SOB that didn’t care about anyone but them self. And I explained a ‘successful’ company treats their employees like gold. I was flamed that I was jealous of the WEALTHY and I should be happy he is rich and not be jealous of him and I MUST HAVE hated capitalism.
I freeze blackberries every year.
You can lay them out individually on a cookie sheet, place in the freezer and when they are frozen, bag them in amounts suitable to what your family likes. This is excellent for making jam or pies.
You can also rinse them, add sugar to taste, pack in containers sized for your family and let them stay in the refrigerator for a day or two before freezing. If you just like to eat them plain, I prefer this method. They will be juicier than the dry frozen method.
Mine are the wild ones. Hybrids and those bought from the store are larger, with more juice to begin with.
Sorry, but I believe the Ca. price. I live in Western Washington, not far from Tacoma, and I paid $2.58 gallon just yesterday at Winco. Darigold butter is going for about $3.00 a pound, chicken legs and thighs are typically .99 - 1.29 pound, and the frozen bags of breast strips, usually go for about $7.00 for a 3 pound bag. Now, the BEEF on the other hand, I rarely buy anymore, just too expensive. I can get a 5 pound chub of ground turkey for $8.00, versus about $15 for ground beef, and that’s not even LEAN ground, it’s the regular 70/30 crap that shrinks away to nothing when you cook it. Georgia must have some high costs elsewhere to make milk $4 a gallon. Only time I’ve paid that price here is when I stop at a gouge-n-go. But I will say prices have been going up. This time last year I was paying $1.99 gallon for milk, and we go through a gallon a day, so I’m VERY aware of the prices!
Thank you for the information. I am going to try both ways.
Oh how I wish I was still able to shop at Cub and Rainbow. I live in a very small town with a very small and expensive grocery store.
My disabled, elderly mom came to live with us a couple of months ago. Now I’m unable to leave the house for not much more than an hour at a time unless we hire a caregiver.
My husband works near the Plymouth Rainbow, but he’s the type whose eyes glaze over the moment he enters a grocery store. :)
Yeah, most of them are dumb as a bag of hammers.
I hope the rest of America is mad enough to outnumber the useful idiots who vote democrat.
My husband was the same. He works 45 miles away 3 days a week and has access to Aldi’s, Sam’s and a local store with consistently lower produce prices. With the high gas prices, it is really not affordable to make a special shopping trip to save on food. He began to notice the prices locally, even at Walmart, compared to the ones in LaCrosse. Now, when he has the time to drive from his downtown office out to where the stores are, he calls and gets a list and does the shopping.
I have a friend whose husband is totally allergic to shopping, purposely does a so-so job (wrong stuff/can’t find something/buys the higher price). He thinks shopping is a female thing. Lately, my husband commented on that, negatively, so, I think he has had a change of attitude. Just keep pointing out the price savings. Leave the receipt out where he can’t help but see it. Moan a bit about the local high price. Maybe he will get it.
Mine will now make sure to check if Kwik Trip has $2 butter and if we need eggs ($1), Granny Smith apples (3/$1.29. I use them in salads of all sorts.), bananas, potatoes or onions (.39/lb). He stops there for gas, anyway, as they have pretty much a monopoly in our area. Their bag milk is $1.19 and they often have acceptable commercial bread for a $1/pound loaf.
Save $4 and it equals a gallon of gas.
standard cows get fed GMO grains
Any other lactase-insufficient FReepers have tried this?
Cue the Obama will pay my mortgage video. How sad.
Post another scanned receipt for medicinal pot or something I need the laugh.
