For the American media, this is a godsend--a chance to present Obama in 2012 as the greatest American military leader since Douglas MacArthur, or maybe Ulysses S. Grant. Meanwhile it gives the European press a chance to get back to their usual anti-Americanism.

The only risk for Obama was that the attack would have failed somehow, like Carter's attempt to rescue the hostages in Iran. If that had happened, the media would have made it a 48-hour story before finding something else to obsess over so the political damage would have been limited and temporary.
