A century and a half after the opening shots of the U.S. Civil War, nearly four in 10 Southerners say they still sympathize with the Confederacy.

“The north on the other hand, had a vigorous press throughout the war”
Evidently you mean other than the newspapers that Lincoln closed and the editors that he had jailed.
Doh! ;~)
But it did seal the fate of the 10th Amendment, i.e. de facto repealed.
Oh, snap!

I love you!
:))
That's a fine little girl you got there (wipes away tear from eye)......
You stole my reply.
[ours just check license plates]
:)
Could you be more specific?
I submit to you that if McCain were president there wouldn't be 0bamaCare and our vice-president would be a billion times better than the bozo currently occupying that spot. Just those two items alone are enough to render your statement totally absurd.
Oh, I disagree. I don't think that we can trust them any more now than we ever could.
“Tea party supporters were only 2 percent more likely to have sympathy for the Confederacy instead of the North, and that difference falls well within the poll’s margin of error for that question. Tea party supporters were 9 percent more likely to say they have “some” admiration for the leaders of Southern states during the Civil War, compared with those who said they oppose the tea party. But compared with the poll’s overall numbers, their views fell within 2 percentage points of the general population — again, within the poll’s margin of error.”
This is a stupid poll...with an agenda.
“The poll was conducted by CNN and the Opinion Research Corp. Pollsters surveyed 824 adult Americans by phone between April 9 and 10”
Adults...and how do they know they are Americans...not registered voters and God forbid, likely voters.
Thanks for the ping! I meant to include you in my above post.
Lordy...these people have too much time on their hands, or an agenda.
You choose...
And in other news 4 in 10 Southerners are still ignorant and living with their parents.
The haters are here.
Only 4 in 10 means 60% of the South has been successfully invaded by Yankees and the lying progressive public school system.
FReeper SeeSharp's demurrer aside, I would add in reply that the Constitution does specify that fewer than 13 States were needed to ratify and put into operation the original Constitutional Union, which was a change from the 100% agreement required to amend by the original Articles of Confederation.
Only nine States were needed to ratify the Constitution, voiding the operation of your principle from the outset.
In addition, there are sovereignty considerations that "raise the game" above contract law, at the State and international levels.
Really? I can buy your New Jersey ass out forty times over..
I'd even bet that my wife's shih tzu puppy is worth more than your parents home.
Slavery based on race?
So slavery of whites by whites was ok?
What makes you think it was based on race?
It was based on opportunity.
Do you think the blacks who owned blacks in Africa and all over the New World, or the vast Mulatto class in Haiti who owned slaves or all the gentrified Indians from Brasil throughout Latin America and in North America with say the Creek or Cherokee nation slave owners fit that template
Blacks in Africa had the bad luck to be where they were from in history's timeline of civilizations and got gobbled up by more advanced peoples to be exploited for labor. The fact they were good to work in warm agriculturally successful climates helped and that they had factions in Mother Africa that were complicit also contributed. It fed the appetite in the West for raw products produced to be consumed first mostly in Europe and later in the North too. Similar fashion for slavery in the rest of the America's too but more to feed the demand in Europe for the goods.
And we deal with all that still...yanking huge numbers of folks out of their timeline and thrusting them into a new epxpectations timeline basically overnight and expecting them en masse to get up to speed after first a primitive existence up to that point and then slavery after that..is hard...no matter the intentions good and bad.
If sub Saharan's labor pool had been whatever color and whatever hair texture and in that state of development it probably would have made little difference.
History is littered with folks of same kind enslaving each other....Black Africa was just such a vast vast resource of that..no one resisted.
It eventually came down to who still needed them and who didn't and the political resentments of counting them in a Republic...and the expansion of it.
This idea that today from your lofty perch you can at the same time pronounce guilt with your disgust on folks from a time period you had zip to do with and make pronouncements that you somehow know better and to spout the canard that it was worse since the races were often but not always different is arrogant.
Btw...since you do think it is based on race does that mean you believe in race?
It's inconsistent that you say that and then as I expect give the usual refrain of "one human race" and that the term race is racist.
Maybe you do believe in race as a loose classification tool of human groupings..maybe not. You can't have it both ways.
You can condemn slavery as a poor treatment of humans by humans...simple enough.
You make it racial and it shows the culture has trained you well.
Do you think it's bigoted to hold whites to higher standards of behavior than other races?
Does that mean whites are better and we should have more expectations from them than say lowly blacks or Indians?
This is a lib mindset issue and is precisely what they do...excuse blacks and transfer the nation's bounty to them in a vain effort to cull votes and make them do right
The results of not holding blacks accountable is pretty obvious. Black culture in my youth ...even though admittedly not with the liberties of today...was actually rather intact and functioned only marginally less viable then others.
If people ever get back to viewing these issues honestly it would help. I doubt I'll live to see that.
And in other news 6 in 10 Southerners are still getting handouts from the government and living with their parents.
Fixed it for ya.
