Pa. 'birther' bill's odds improve, analyst says

HARRISBURG -- State legislation requiring presidential candidates to prove they are natural-born citizens is a political effort aimed at President Obama, a Philadelphia Democrat said today.

Rep. Babette Josephs, ranking Democrat on the House State Government Committee, said the bill by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, the committee chairman, isn't needed since Obama says he is an American citizen and has produced documentation.

"I believe him myself," said Josephs, who as the chair last session blocked the bill from being considered.

Metcalfe has 28 co-sponsors for the bill he said was initiated "in light of the controversy regarding citizenship and public officials."

"I wouldn't say (the bill) is specifically in response to Obama," Metcalfe said Tuesday. The bill stems from the lack of documentation required for candidates, he said.

"Despite his (Metcalfe's disclaimers), it seems to me it is aimed at President Obama and his re-election effort," Josephs said. "I think it is very political in a negative sense."

Metcalfe's memo seeking co-sponsorship says presidential and vice presidential candidates would have to establish proof of "natural born citizenship," age and residency....

After Brewer vetoed the Arizona bill, I have lost confidence that any of these bills will ever, actually become law. And, if they do, they will be challenged in court (although I can’t imagine what grounds they will use).

"isn't needed since Obama says he is an American citizen and has produced documentation"

Fine. If he's good, then this isn't about him; it's merely finding a means to uphold the Constitution since the courts hace refused to do so. So this merely is about an enforcement mechanism for the future. No problem the, right??

Hopefully the AZ legislature will regroup next week to override Brewer's veto.

Rep. Babette Josephs, ranking Democrat on the House State Government Committee, said the bill by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, the committee chairman, isn't needed since Obama says he is an American citizen and has produced documentation.

Then OBumber won't mind to produce that elusive long form birth certificate.

Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal has gone on record that he will sign their state eligibility ballot bill.

The Governor of Louisiana has promised to sign one when it comes out of the legislature. It will only take one to bring this thing to a head and Urkel will have to produce the document.

If Obama is constitutionally eligible, then how is it targeted at him, and why would it be a problem?

I contend we are reenacting the days of Gideon... God culled Gideon’s army down to 300 so the people would know who was in control... There is a whirlwind of chaff blowing across this nation.

Pennsylvania? I’d been thinking that Obama would just ignore such new laws in any state he lost in 2008 and had little chance of winning in 2012. But Pennsylvania would be one he couldn’t afford to ignore.

Is not PA the state where the person, (IIRC Mr. Berg), lives, that first asked for eligibility documentation? Seems only fitting this state be first in the nation to require any candidate to demonstrate with documentation their eligibility.

Do you know what is so very sad about this Obama long form birth certificate controversy?

1. This is what is so sad about it: After the Nov. 2012 presidential election is over, states will be rushing to pass presidential eligibility laws in preparation for the Obama-less 2016 presidential elections and beyond, such as elections in 2020, 2024, 2028, and nobody will put up a fight to stop the law or care whether the law is passed or not, because if Obama wins re-election, he won't be eligible to run again, and lawmakers can say definitely that the law is not being passed specifically to attack Obama.

2. My prediction: I predict that soon after the 2012 election and before the 2016 presidential elections, EVERY state will have a presidential eligibility law in effect, and I bet that most of those laws will look pretty close to the presidential eligibility bill that Arizona Gov. Brewer recently vetoed.

3. I can't believe that state lawmakers won't go ahead and pass presidential eligibility laws before the 2012 presidential elections, when they know in their hearts that once the 2012 presidential election is over, they will rush to pass presidential eligibility laws so that an Obama-type long form birth certificate circus never happens again beginning with the 2016 presidential election.

4. Yes, it so sad to say but cowardly state lawmakers will wait until AFTER the 2012 presidential election is over to step up to the plate and be counted by passing a long-needed presidential eligibility law, a law that will probably look like the Arizona bill recently vetoed by the coward Governor Brewer of Arizona.

we cannot allow the left to paint this as a racist action

we must insist that we are only reaffirming the requirements for eligibility so there is no ‘misunderstandings’ in the future, regardless of the race of the applicant

Zero’s father was not a citizen at the time of Zero’s birth and never applied for citizenship during his lifetime.

Zero was never eligible for POTUS.

Do not hold your breath. The left has so terrorized US with the 'racist' accusation the GOP has gone to wearing DEPENDS. The Constitution does not mean squat to the majority of elected office holders in this nation.

all the more reason to ridicule the accusation of ‘racist’. it’s been used too long to keep ‘the white man’ on the plantation and to manipulate the intentionally undereducated ‘black man’ (and now, ‘hispanic man’) into being overseers. Reformation is over, by God.

Zero wants his people in our faces. I think we follow Trump’s lead and get in some face of our own and use the power of the spoken word to tear down the lie called racism and declare the debt paid once and for all and call the racemongers out for the charlatans they truely are.

The liberal mind always accuses others of the very thing it is. There are as many or more 'whites' in this accusation business as there are minorities. IT is a pyramid scheme and each layer of the pyramid takes their cut.

I remember living through Clintonism and old BJ being call the first 'black' president. Well the Clintons got pawned by a more 'black' person and got their aspirations sent to the cleaners. Now IF any of what we have been told is accurate then our present ruler is half white. So we have evidence that anyone no matter their creed, ethnicity, has the ability and will to be racist.

It was Hillry's campaign that birthed this question of eligibility and seems the whole world has forgotten that bit of information. So why are we NOT asking the question Hillry WHAT did you know and WHEN did you know it?

In 2008, in response to widely circulated rumors and Internet postings, Obama's campaign posted his "certificate of live birth" form filed in Hawaii.

Dear Brad Bumstead of the Tribune Review,

Look very closely at these two words:

(1) Certificate

(2) Certification

Now, here's a very difficult question for you:

Do you see any differences between the two words?

No? I didn't think you would.
