Remembering We are at War

Misrata.

I think its a little sad that a month after the US went to war in Libya, the story has completely disappeared from the news, and the public seems thoroughly uninterested in the subject. Afghanistan and Iraq are the same way, but the apathy took many years to develop, in Libya it was almost instant. Politicians are talking about the economy, and gay marriage, and birth certificates, meanwhile bombs are flying and and a nation in which for better or worst we intervened is being torn to pieces.

Here is a video of Misrata, a rebel held city that has been under siege behind enemy lines from the start of the uprising. This is how it was in 1985, 25 years before the civil war turned it into no man’s land.

As you can see, even in 1985 the place looks inhabitable, stores, cars, people shopping, I think it pays to see the besieged city as it really is, not as a dot on the map. All this changed since the start of the rebellion. The city has been under siege for over a month with artillery bombardment and tank incursions by Ghaddafi forces. When the coalition took out the heavy armor and artillery, Libyan forces resorted to Stalingrad tactics with constant bombardment from short range light artillery, frenzied street to street combat, and hundreds of snipers from both sides making the whole city impossible to walk through. The civilians are trapped and starving as the siege grinds on around them. Here is what Misrata looks like now:

Misrata: no food, no water, just snipers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8X0f496F7U4&feature=player_embedded

I am not posting this to say we should be doing more or that we shouldn’t have gotten involved, such debates are academic at this point. I just think we should be aware of the fate of the people who we cast lots with in war.

GWB spent 19 months building a case to the Congress and the world.

Obama bypassed congress.
I think he has a matter of days left to explain himself or be in contempt of the law.

I am no legal scholar, but Obama was counting on this action to be over with in days, not months, in order to circumvent congressional approval.

It’s time to call this ahole out.

Ahole boy has 6 weeks...

The War Powers Resolution requires the President to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and forbids armed forces from remaining for more than 60 days, with a further 30 day withdrawal period, without an authorization of the use of military force or a declaration of war.

The War Powers Resolution requires the President to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action (he did)

Now he has to get himself out of the sticky wicket he is in.

He made it clear that this would be a matter of days, not months.

Obama is going to get snared in his own pompous interpretation of the law.

FUBO!

And Dump Trump!

No. The war powers act provides that the President can send U.S. armed forces into action abroad only by authorization of Congress or in case of "a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces." There has not even been an allegation that there has been an attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces." The Libyan fiasco was illegal from the start and continues to be illegal, no waiting period needed.

Yes but how many of our Republican "leaders" or wannabee presidential candidates will stand up and say this?
