He's said he'd probably run as an independent unless he wins the nomination. Now assuming his primary appeal is to conservatives, his running as an independent would split the anti-Obama vote and virtually guarantee Obama's reelection. What kind of person who truly values conservative principles promises to help re-elect Obama if he doesn't get the nomination?
I agree with you assessment, the idea of running as a third party candidate, is thrown out there by him to emphasize his belief that his views are more important than the party. IMO, that is a positive. I absolutely HATE the Republican AND Democrat parties. Strict adherence to party discipline is why people that may believe in the same philosophy, will fight on an issue, to the death, even though they would flip votes if their guy were pushing it.
