The North had slavery just the same and even defended it by amending several of their state constitutions to strengthen it not long before the war. In fact, Lincoln himself had written and argued that free slaves should not be welcomed into the State of Illinois. In case you didnt know, Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation didnt free a single Northern slave or southern one, just the ones the Union army captured. Thats right; they even used them as slaves for the Union army even after that so-called proclamation.
So much for the South being the defenders of slavery and the North being something else.
