I hate the word "fair." It's possibly the most subjective word in the English language, but it's a word I hear tossed around by politicians like a goal for our society to all be "fair", or, more often, as a grumble when things don't go their way. No one likes when things are "unfair", but can anyone define what "fair" is?
Nancy Pelosi's comments the other day got me thinking about this, when she said the GOP needs to take back their party and make it the "party of fairness." Aside from the obvious observations, such as why anyone would take advice from their enemy, and the irony of her newly-found concern for "fairness" only after being booted as Speaker in a landslide election, there's also a transparent childishness to the use of the word "fairness" to describe "the way I like things."...

Good observation. "Fairness" is a victim issue, implying there is a need for reparation of some injustice. This injustice is seldom able to be specified but the idea is to finesse that little problem and move right on to the reparation stage. This means taking something out of the hides of presumed perpetrators, like wealthy or successful people, or those who seek to uphold traditional values.

It's interesting that the adjective "fair" has ao many meanings, some even contradictory:
- evenhanded, just, playing by the rules
- beautiful (my fair lady, the fair sex)
- mediocre (the service was fair)
- clear and sunny (fair weather)
- favorable (a fair wind)
- a moderately large size or quantity (a fair distance)

Dictionary.com has 31 different definitions. Merriam-Webster has 11. My favorite is “superficially pleasing”

Thanks SquarePants.
...the irony of her newly-found concern for "fairness" only after being booted as Speaker in a landslide election
After she's booted from Congress, then tried for corruption and thrown in prison, I'll say she's been treated fairly.
