Democrat and female pioneer for women in politics, Geraldine Ferraro passed away today in the age of 75 from her battle with blood cancer. She was a classy and smart woman who would discuss politics, and may differ with Republicans, but was always respectful.
As a woman, I admire Ferraros tenacity and paving the way for others in politics. We may disagree on politics, but she never demeaned the other side. Pure class.
More from CNN:
In 1985, Ferraro was the first female vice presidential candidate from a major U.S. political party when she ran with Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale.
They lost by a landslide to Republican presidential candidate Ronald Reagan and vice presidential candidate George H.W. Bush. In what became the first of Reagans two terms in the White House, the Reagan-Bush ticket won the popular vote 58.8% to 40% and then nearly swept the electoral votes, 525 to 13.
In 1978, she was elected as a U.S. representative for the 9th Congressional District of New York and was re-elected in 1980 and 1982.
Sarah Palin wrote on Facebook:
My family and I would like to express our sincere condolences to the family of Geraldine Ferraro. When I had the honor of working alongside Geraldine on election night last year, we both discussed the role of women in politics and our excited expectation that someday that final glass ceiling would be shattered by the election of a woman president. She was an amazing woman who dedicated her life to public service as a teacher, prosecutor, Congresswoman, and Vice Presidential candidate. She broke one huge barrier and then went on to break many more. The world will miss her. May she rest in peace and may her example of hard work and dedication to America continue to inspire all women. Flashback, via RuBegonia on Twitter, of Ferraro and Palin, the only two women VP, talking politics. A profound moment. Two female pioneers for each of their parties.
Remember when Palin became the nominee? Ferraro talked about how proud of a moment it was for women, to have a female in a ticket for the presidency. Ill always remember that.
“Ferraro was corrupt and Sarah shouldnt have praised her.”
Exactly right. Palin’s feet of clay are showing; just another politician...
Jourbalists anymore are twenty-somethings who didn’t want to take the hard sciences and even teaching looked hard.
Apparently Sarah Palin was very impressed since it was obvious Geraldine was also a famous woman in politics, regardless of her left wing political positions. How nice.
Manners lesson - One does not speak ill of the dead.
It is permissible to have a slight smile on your face in private upon reading the obituary.
You know noob...how we treat the dead says a lot about a person. Guess what I am thinking about you...
Also, God, I am afraid, is not going to inspire her to seek, or not to seek, the presidency. So if an angel doesn't appear to her she'll take this as a 'no' from God?
And, she needs to can it with the changes her family would go thru if she ran, and if she won. Our fecking country is being taken down a hell hole by Obama & Co. and she's worried about her family being inconvenienced? Boo-fecking-hoo.
Palin needs to declare her intention to seek the nomination or she needs to make it clear she does not intend to run. Enough of this bullshite.
Geraldine is probably in Hell isn’t that punishment enough. Let her gnash her teeth in private.
Ferraro was selected BECAUSE she was a woman at the height of the feminist movement. She had been elected to congress by "mouth breathers".
I always thought that conservatives judged people by their actions and not by their gender or the color of their skin. May God bless Ferraro, and forgive her for her agressive pro-abortion positions.
I wasn’t talking about a conservative slamming her because he doesn’t like her. I was talking about the left wing press slamming her because Geraldine was their girl! Just like they get pissed when a conservative quotes Martin Luther King.
“Just like they get pissed when a conservative quotes Martin Luther King.”
And they get even more pissed when they learn that MLK was a Republican.
That was in the news when she was running for VP...old news! It was about her husband.
This is one of those times she should have not opened her mouth. Looks like a camapaign tactic, even if it isn’t. She should have just sent private condolences.
She and Geraldine had very little in common.
That's one of the dumbest things I've read today.
I didn’t like Ferraro, politically or personally. Nonetheless, prayers for her and her family.
?Obviously Sarah has more class than you.
Wow, God is on this thread!!
Put down the long neck and have an Okie read this entire thread to you. Ferraro dies and the Palin cultists turn it into a Valentine to the half governor.
We are past the point where it is acceptable to speak polite lies about the destroyers of our country. Palin should have offered condolences to the family and left it there.
When Carter goes to his eternal “reward”, no one ought to pretend that he was anything other than a lying, thieving, enemy of the American people and the Constitution. (Other than that, he was a fine man ;-)
A “Republican” of the marxist variety.
