Bill Maher Ignorance Update: Obama Says U.S. To Be Major Buyer Of Brazilian Oil
News Busters ^ | 20 mar 2011 | Noel Sheppard

Bill Maher in the middle of last year's crisis in the Gulf of Mexico wrongly stated on national television that Brazil had gotten off of oil 30 years ago.

With great irony, President Obama announced Saturday that he wants America to become a major buyer of - wait for it! - Brazilian oil drilled offshore:

Traders are also concerned about protests and tensions in a number of other oil-producing nations in the region.

Mr Obama spoke of the US's desire to secure more of its oil from Brazil in future after talks with his counterpart, President Dilma Rousseff, in Brasilia at the start of a two-day visit to Latin America's biggest country. "I have told her that the United States wants to be a major customer, which can be a win-win for both our countries," he said.

Brazil possesses some of the world's biggest offshore oil reserves in the pre-salt area off its south-east coast.

"Brazil possesses some of the world's biggest offshore oil reserves."

Got that, Bill?

Yet, that's not the only media irony involving this announcement.

When Obama suspended drilling in the Gulf as a result of the BP spill, oil-hating media cheered like they had won the Super Bowl. The President has since proposed offshore drilling limits that Republicans are fighting against.

If offshore drilling is such an awful thing for the environment, shouldn't it be awful everywhere?

With this in mind, it's going to be very interesting to see how Obama's Brazilian proposal gets covered, particularly given recent right-wing calls for more American domestic drilling.

With oil firmly over $100 a barrel, and gasoline quickly heading to $4 a gallon, citizens are waiting for a coherent energy policy from Washington that addresses this issue.

IIRC Obama loaned Brazil $800 million from the Stimulus Funds, The timing was such that George Soros made a bundle. Also, Obama kept drilling in the Gulf shut down so long that several rigs have been leased at a discount & moved to Brazil.

Anyone have links to the details?

We shouldn’t be buying oil from anybody. We should be producing it ourselves.

They switched to ethanol, thus they will have more oil to export. Also, they have huge regions suitable for sugar cane which is a lot more efficient for ethanol than corn. In addition, all the beaches belong to the people. Thus, no wealthy landowners to protest the danger of an oil spill. I don’t know how much of a factor that is in this country.

But they get theirs from sugar cane, not food.

Since 1976 the Brazilian government has made it mandatory to blend ethanol with gasoline, and since 2007 the legal blend is around 25% ethanol and 75% gasoline (E25).[4] In addition, by December 2010 Brazil had a fleet of 12 million flex-fuel automobiles and light trucks and over 500 thousand flex-fuel motorcycles regularly using neat ethanol fuel (known as E100).

The scarcity of sugar products in Brazil, the top producer, has led the country to turn to the US for corn-based ethanol to replenish depleted supplies of its own cane-based alternative, Agrimoney.com has learned.

I've heard all over $4/per gallon California about "how the Brazilians have kicked the oil habit and so can we!" Really, how many cars does Brazil have compared to the US? How much oil does Brazil use compared to the US? How many men are out of work because of the shut down of oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico (~ 8,000, I heard). Oil is the life-blood of the American economy. Period. Drill, Baby, Drill -- straight through the wimpy environmentalists!

How nice of the President Dickhead to grant reparations to Brazil.
Yet another matter Palin will have to reverse or make void when she's POTUS.

After the Gulf oil spill Obama placed a moratorium on oil drilling by American companies in the Gulf and sent/sold many of the oil rigs off to Brazil. Before the Gulf oil spill Obama was underwriting offshore drilling by Petrobas, the Brazil's national oil company. Obama is underwriting in Brazil what he won't allow in America.

"If offshore drilling is such an awful thing for the environment, shouldn't it be awful everywhere?"

Yes, but only if there's billions of $'s to redistribute to socialists cronies. To wit, Zero stated he wanted to increase manufacturing and exports in the US some unfathomable amount (to placate the union bosses no doubt), but his czars denied a bridge loan to sell US made electric generating equipment based on clean coal to China - because it's not up to their falsely derived green standards. So now a non-US manufacturer will get the nearly unlimited business in China and China will still burn coal - only less cleanly and the US looses the employment.

Is Zero that stupid, or does he have something else up his sleeve?

Given the climate, I wonder how they keep the water out of it. OTOH, maybe it’s “grown” everywhere so it doesn’t have to travel far, and it probably “grows” year round. This might work for them.

The Brazilian government tried to use 100% ethanol (produced from sugar cane not corn) and propped it up with a healthy subsidy. After about ten years they pulled the subsidy and the price shot up because of the cost of production. People put up with crappy fuel (one third less energy content, lower millage, problems with elastomers gaskets & seals, &C.)as long as the price stayed low. Without the artificial price prop, the market returned to petroleum based fuels w/in a year.

GtG

so we gave $2 billion to petrobaz... a company that has plenty of cash...

so they could drill off our coast...

and sell us oil...

while simultaneously shutting down any American companies from drilling in the same locations.

check

MSM says Soros sold his Petrobras holdings.

But can’t say who bought them.

I’d bet he sold them to another corp he runs.
