How about sea cucumbers, found in Chinese restaurants?
You heathen, dog........oh, wait....I'm not mooselimb.
j/k.
Those look quite tasty!
Well, I don’t intend on sacrificing any lambs or any other animal, but if I wish to give up something for the Lenten season, why does it bother some people so much? If when I give up this certain item, and yes I know it is an extremely small sacrifice, if this reminds me, in my everyday life, of the great sacrifice of Jesus Christ is that not a good thing? And, no, I don’t need to give up chocolate or swearing or soda to be a good Christian, but I don’t think there is anything wrong with participating in this tradition. And it is also tradition in my immediate family that some one gives up sweets during this time of many of our family members birthdays and we not only get a good laugh out of it but have a family size discussion about Easter and Good Friday. My mother really didn’t like fish but made it on Fridays during lent. My father was Protestant and didn’t get the tradition but loved fish, so always went along with it and never “cheated” and ate meat. Go figure!
Sounds yummy.
The whole thing of giving up meat for Lent or on Fridays totally lacks scriptural support, and seafood is actually fish meat, but scallops are good. Scampi, with linguini.
I’m going meatless. Taco Bell for tonite.
I pan fry scallops frequently. I simply use salt and black ground pepper to season. You may use other condiments, but I’d avoid garlic in this approach as the garlic will burn.
My approach is as follows:
1) Put about an eighth inch of any oil that can handle high heat (like Safflower or Canola) in a good quality steel fry pan (one with a thick bottom). Heat to medium low.
2) Split a couple Habanero in half and scrap out seeds. (Best to not touch peppers with your hands. Use a pair of tongs to handle the peppers.)
3) Put peppers in pan and let them sizzle around for 10 minutes to infuse oil with the pepper. TURN ON YOUR EXHAUST FAN AND PREFERABLY OPEN DOORS AND WINDOWS!! GET READY TO COUGH. Not a bad idea to cover the pan, but not critical.
4) Discard peppers.
5) Turn heat to high.
6) After a few minutes, add scallops. Flip them after a few minutes (before they burn black, but its OK for them to burn brown), What you are actually doing is caramelizing them. USE A SPLATTER SCREEN. MY HOTTEST BURNER IS 16,OOO BTUS. If yours is more, your cook time will be less and/or you may want to back the heat off high some. BE CAREFUL NOT TO SPLASH OIL AS IT MAY CATCH ON FIRE!!!
7) Brown on other side for a couple minutes.
The key to this is using a liberal amount of oil. You are not deep frying the scallops, but you are frying them for sure. Second key is heat and time. You need enough heat to cook the scallops fast AND to get them “crusty” on the outside without over-cooking them on the inside.
May take you a few times, but this is restaurant quality stuff if you like spicy food!!
“...fish fries are switching to haddock...”
.
Haddock? Where are you from? Vatican or something?
We poor Catholics eat catfish.
Wonderful idea - yes. The hot olive oil over the food is brilliant.
Emeril dusts his scallops with sugar before pan searing them. Scallops are awesome with tequila lime cream sauce.
Proof, that once again, everything is better with bacon.
I wouldn't say everything...
But the popcorn turkey?
Aw, dagnabit. Now you’ve gone and made me hungry for catfish when all I have in front of me is a bowl of oatmeal. :-)
Mmm...catfish...with a side of fried okra....Mmmmm!
You’re not telling the whole story.
I bet that right next to that alleged bowl of oatmeal there is a crystal bowl with balucha caviar from Iran with a silver spoon stuck into it, a few slices of fresh lemon, imported saltwater crackers and Indian capers.
And next to it a frozen bottle of Stolichnaya. And you call that fasting?
Ha! Trust me on this: even if I had the money to buy expensive fish eggs for my breakfast, I would not be buying expensive fish eggs for my breakfast. :-)
No Stoli either. Wild Turkey is my drink (though not at breakfast!).
