Sarah Palin tweets: We’re $14,000,000,000,000+ in debt, yet rodeo clowns still want to fund Cowboy Poetry Party. That must be 1 helluvahigh national priority shindig!

It will survive just fine, it's supported by mines and business also.

I'm just asking why out of all the projects and organizations in the U.S. that receive money that he would pick that one in his own state in a county that can't stand him as an example seems odd unless he had a purpose.

I live close enough to the Cowboy Poetry Festival to see the ads for it. I’ve always wondered something: who attends something like this? It always seemed to me to be a meeting of extremes—a combination of the rugged western cowboy and the city-slicker girly-man. It just don’t make sense!

I’ve lived here for ten years but haven’t attended it, just not my thing. It’s been around for a long time. There’s a lot more to it then what is being written about the past couple of days. There’s western concerts, stories, shows, food, western crafts, etc. Everyone I’ve ever talked to that goes says it’s a good time. I have a hard time believing it can’t support itself. From what I read it doesn’t directly get government support, it gets support thru The Western Folklife Center that gets support from the government art deal, if any of that makes sense.

I am sure that is his scheme.
I love the cowboy poets/poetry. Is this not something that the private sector could support though? Why does the federal taxpayer have to fund this, or 80% of the other stuff it has it’s mitts on?

What a shame Arizonans didn’t retire him in 2010!
I couldn’t believe he was allowed to cheatand bully his way over the finish line.
The race in 2012 will be 1 trillion times dirtier! Prepare for it.

This area is also Republican and votes that way. What better way to piss the county off at the “Mean Republicans” then to tell them the thousands of tourist and dollars are being taken away by them?

You nailed it!

If the festival brings in thousands of tourists, then it should be structured to be profitable, not dependent on government grants. Capitalism is a mindset. If you depend on government grants, your event is not assured of continued existence. They need to develop sponsors and figure a way to get those thousands of cowboy poetry lovers to pay the fare.

Multiple this thinking by 100,000 and you get why people don’t ask the question “Ought federal money to be spent on this?”
