One thing I am curious about is the wording I see in all the articles about this. There are a lot of items that are never really sold at the “list price”, but the wording seems to imply that not only coupons are affected but just plain sale prices. So, If you go into a car dealership and MSRP is $30,000, but you talk them down to $25,000, do you pay sales tax on the 30. I’m assuming the articles are just poorly written because that would be absolutely ludicrous.
Taxes are charged on the amount of money that actually changes hands. In the case of a coupon, they can claim the company treated it as money. But when there is no coupon, that loophole does not exist.
