Eisenhower wasn't a great General. His subordinates made him look like one. Patton, Bradley and Beetle Smith did all the work.
He wasn't a great president either. He fed off of Truman's mess in Korea, and benefited from a decent (not great) economy in the '50s.
He was average as best. Lucky is more like it.

Not to mention Ike nominated Warren and Brennan to the Supreme Court.

My Daddy used to tell me that Ike didn't have the sense to pour p*ss out of a boot with the arrow stamped on the heel. Pa was a World War II vet who knew Ike's reputation. The men loved and respected Patton, MacArthur, Bradley and others. They merely tolerated Eisenhower.
Don't forget that he was the pick of the Dewey/RINO wing of the party in 1952 to make sure Robert Taft, the leading conservative voice at the time, wasn't nominated.

Pretty lucky, elected twice. He didn’t do anything great but then he didn’t screw up either. At least you knew he had America’s best interest at heart.
