carthases = catharses
Sharing such a story with the public is far less "narcissistic" than the orgies of self-congratulation we see from Hollywood celebrities, or from Obama, every day.
“By calling it a ‘confession’, you are essentially blaming the victim. He told a story about what someone else did to him.”
Surely you know “confession” does not necessarily imply acknowledgment of wrongdoing. All it needs to mean is that someone is disclosing or publicizing something, usually something damaging (though, in this case, it’s only superficially damaging; everyone pretends it makes you a better person to have had horrible things happen to you). If you’re not aware of that, and only think of confession in terms of the expiation of guilt, I suggest you check a dictionary.

This is part of that orgy. I don’t see how it’s any different than the usual self-congratulation. Except that you get to pretend you’re helping people, which is even worse, come to think of it. For not only are you bothering people for attention and sympathy, you also now have pretensions of altruism.
I’m a little startled by the hostile replies. When a woman admits she was sexually abused, almost everyone is sympathetic.
