My son brought home suet, but a bird rescue website said suet is okay. He’s eating it, and the fruit-carrot-lettuce mixture.

Wonderful pictures! That's so rare to successfully rescue a baby like that.

Excellent!!!! and thanks for the comments on the photos. I happen to love mockingbirds, so I enjoyed his stay very much. Good luck with your beautiful dove! We also had a car struck, injured cedar waxwing that my son rescued downtown and I was able to keep it for a few weeks and release back out in the wild. It was eating a bag of frozen blueberries every other day, so I had a great interest in getting it back to health ASAP! $$$$. The wing injury wasn't critical, and he healed fast. By the way, at that time I had NEVER seen a cedar waxing up close, no less in my back yard, but I am not kidding: every year after we let that bird go, a flock of cedar waxwings would land in my back yard, sit there on the bird bath and maple tree for a few minutes then leave. We moved after 5 years, but they kept coming back once a year until we moved. Pretty cool!

LOL! We have a Maine Coon too, but she’s not a big hunter. She’s black and white and SUPER PRETTY, and not the brightest bulb in the lamp. She’s my nightly lap cat though and as darling and furry as anything.

Give him a shallow dish, like a saucer or souffle dish of water, put seed in a cereal bowl, and try to rig up a perch in the cat carrier. Birds need to roost. You might be stuck with him until Spring when he moults and gets more wing feathers.

He seems okay. He was walking around the back yard fine, and even fluttered around a bit. He is sitting upright now, but has his eyes closed unless I walk up to him. He didn’t panic at all when I picked him up.

Uh oh it is now a DOVE ZOMBIE!!

A shotgun blast to the head is the only way.

I just went out there to look for feathers. There are no big feathers, just really small ones, and they’re all very downey at the base. He did fly from the ground to a tree, but didn’t stay long, and didn’t even attempt to fly when I picked him up. I’m thinking maybe all he needs is a bit of rest. His eyes are clear and perky, so I have hope.

Good for you for trying to save the Dove. I’ve taken several wild baby birds over the years to a local wild bird rescue here in Denver. Even if the bird should die, at least you tried and gave the bird a comfortable place to do it and not in a cat’s mouth. Good luck to you and let us know how it turns out.

Dove flew off this morning. He (or she) ate quite a lot of suet and lettuce, and got a good night’s rest. He was bright and chipper, and did a lot of dancing when I opened the curtain and let him see outside. That let me know he was ready to be released. I took him (her) outside and lowered the carrier side. He didn’t go anywhere for quite a while and I thought “Oh, no, I have a pet dove.” But then he took off strong and headed due south. I managed to video the whole thing. This was a happy ending.

You my most favored soul, made a lot of us look barbaric.

You get my most humble gratitude. BTW, who suggested the suet and lettuce? I'da never thunk?
