I think this explains a lot. Political correctness is destroying the country and we're letting it happen.

Every time someone pushes political correctness in person, we need to respond, “political correctness is so gay!”

PC reminds me of George Orwell's doublespeak in "1984".
The similarities are too close for comfort.
In both cases they seek to control what people can express and even think by changing the language.

I fully agree with the thesis, but the credibility of the author is kind of lacking and taints the whole thing. He says the phrase “political correctness” originated around 10 years ago, but it has been around a lot longer.

No offense to anyone, but I read articles like this and I have to wonder if Jared Loughner with his obsession on the government control of language is all that crazy after all? Is he crazy for pointing it out or are we crazy for allowing it?

“The phrase came about, according to Bill Lind in an address ten years ago, in a comic strip”
Someone is rather historically ignorant.
The phrase has been around since the days of the Stalinist purges - originally used by the left - and was oft the punchline of jokes when I was in college in the early 1980’s.

Political correctness has been around at least since the Soviets used it in the 20s, and my guess is they came up with it long before that. When the party takes a position, you have to agree with it to be politically correct. Was heavily used by American commies in the 30s.
You are right, the author betrays a lack of understanding of the subject matter of his essay by not knowing the origin of the phrase, and thus hurts his credibility.

I received a Christmas gift of “Politically Correct Bedtime Stories” in the early ‘90’s. If a parody of it only emerged that late, I knew the origins went back much further.

Actually, he quotes someone else who made the statement. The speech he quotes was made ten years ago.

The sad thing is, Political Correctness is far more insidious than just the language attack. The Left has succeeded in minimizing Political Correctness to that one aspect, then throwing in the humor with it.

Political Correctness is not funny. Political Correctness is deadly serious. Political Correctness has no sense of humor.
For instance, I once spent 2 1/2 (paid) days and nights in a hotel, stuck on the groupthink/sensitivity train of thought. They had a lesson on humor - hung up three sheets of chartpad (2 X 3?) covered with NO!
As in: No black jokes, no white jokes, no fat jokes, no thin jokes, no blonde jokes, no gay jokes, no old jokes, no young jokes, no Arab jokes, no Jew jokes, no clerk jokes, no customer jokes, no Protestant jokes(?), no gay-Catholic-priests-raping-altar-boy jokes, no biker jokes, no tree-hugger jokes, no cat jokes, no dog jokes, animal jokes, no robot jokes, no tall jokes, no short jokes, no men jokes, and ESPECIALLY NO WOMEN JOKES!
