I learned of this recording from a "close family member" who works in DHS. He learned about it during a conversation with other DHS managers and it's currently making the rounds in "The Tower" in Lansing. Because he trains social workers and has to know both state and federal policy, he was appalled when he heard this for himself. The phone system announcements are supposed to follow a strict, approved script, which this worker obviously didn't use. It's a BIG-time no-no and he said he'd be severely reprimanded if he'd ever done such a thing. However, this occurred in a Detroit office where, he says, he's trained some workers who could barely read.

Granted, this is just one side of the story and there's no way of knowing what the applicant for services said to the worker...once they made it through that obnoxious announcement! All social workers are extremely overworked and have huge case loads in Michigan, but there is no excuse for this.
