“I worked out an anarchistic theory that all government is evil, that the punishment does more harm than the crime and the people can be trusted to behave decently if you will only let them alone.” —George Orwell, The Road To Wigan Pier (A painful read to say the least. Not exactly 1984 or Animal Farm, but a good point nonetheless.)

The current system health care system in the US isn’t perfect, but it’s far superior to socialized health care. The main problem is that government got in the way of the free market by insisting no one could buy insurance across state lines. This crony capitalist set up allowed insurance companies to create monopolies with the help of the state.

True, IF you have adequate health insurance. If you don't, you are much better off in the otherwise inferior health care systems of Europe or Canada.

I am always amused by the contradiction in conservative rhetoric on this subject.

One one hand, many claim everybody gets decent health care anyway. OTOH, they claim that providing adequate health care to all will bankrupt the economy.

Both can't be true.

Equally silly is a liberal contradiction. They claim costs will go down, AND everybody will get better health care. This is nonsense.

It's perfectly obvious what will happen when they finally get their eldorado of a single-payer system.

For about 60% to 70% of Americans, those presently with middle-class insurance, health care will get slightly to moderately worse.

For those presently without adequate insurance or health care, care will get much better.

For the 2% in the elite, health care, as in any society, even those with theoretically equal care, will remain the best available.

For everybody, especially those in the middle, costs will go up. A bunch.

BTW, your Orwell quote is nonsense on stilts. Most people may behave decently without order being imposed, but enough will not that the system quickly disintegrates.
