There was a report last night that, while the bomb squad was working on the "'coffee can' object", there was a "loud noise" that disturbed a prayer vigil that was being held nearby. Speculation (with which I tend to agree) was that the noise was an (explosive) action by the bomb squad (aka "blow it in place") to disable the object.
