The police had me dead nuts and yet by just being normal and polite and having my Firefighter/EMT stuff in sight, I ended up with just a paper warning.
I think I told about 5 people total about this incident.
Shortly after buying my 1-ton, I was driving through a construction zone. The light turned yellow but I didn't think I had time to stop. The last heavy vehicle I had driven was a 5-ton military spec and I was still finding "the zone" with the new truck. A police officer pulled me over.
The road was still very busy, it was a multi lane divided highway that the city was widening and traffic came pretty close. I asked if we could move to a nearby parking lot for the officer's safety. At first he said it wasn't necessary, but then a car came pretty close to clipping him. I said, "Sir, I must insist we move to the parking lot for your safety."
After we relocated, he ran my documents and let me off.
I didn't "suck up" or "kiss ass" at any time. I was prepared to accept the ticket because I ran the red light. The officer likely responded with mercy when confronted with common sense and common courtesy.
