Want To Switch Browsers - Would Like Advice

I think that I am going to switch browsers from IE8 [since I am having an annoying little problem with it].

Will keep IE as a backup.

Now, what should I use? I have heard a few nasty things about Opera, so I am considering between FireFox and Chrome.

Any thoughts ???

I’ve been around computers since the days of the Univac 1050-II. I’ve been around Microsoft crap since the days of choice, between PC-DOS and MS-DOS. It hasn’t changed, it’s still dreaming of being a monopoly.

I tried Safari and eventually dumped it. I found the way it handled bookmarks was very annoying.

Went back to Firefox.

I have a suggestion for you after the explanation of my problem.

No, when I went to certain [not all] web sites, and entered data into a box [such as a Zip Code for Store Locator], I had to type the first number [or character] twice. The first hit eould not enter the number or character and the cursor would not move.

For example, if I typed in 21111, it came in 1111. Then, I had to re-position the cursor at the beginning and type in the 2. Or, if I hit the 2 twice in a row, it then came in and then the following four 1's came in without a problem.

I postd at a Microsoft web site and an MS engineer suggested that I disable the IE Add-Ons one-by-one to see if one of them was causing the problem.

Amazingly, this was the problem and it was with the first Add-On in my list [Adobe Shockwave Flash Object].

I disabled it, got out of IE8, went back in and tested at one of the bad web sites. Problem solved.

As a test, I then shut down the computer and re-booted. I opened up IE8 and tested the web site again. No problem.

I then re-enabled the Adobe Add-On and tested at the web site - still no problem.

I then shut down the computer and re-booted. I opened up IE8 and tested the web site again. No problem.

So, I have fixed the problem and the affecting Add-On is again enabled.

I would suggest that you disable the Add-Ons one-by-one to test your PDF file.

In IE8 at the top of the browser, go to Tools > Manage Add-Ons to get to the list. Disable each one-by-one continuously [along the way, not enabling the ones that don't correct the problem]. If you get to one that corrects the problem through disabling, re-boot the computer and test to make sure that the correction sticks.

Then, re-enable the offending Add-On and test. If that stays OK, then re-boot the computer and test again.

Finally, re-enable all of the Add-Ons that did not correct the problem.

FYI: As you disable the Add-Ons and then re-start IE8 to test, some of your web pages may give you a warning that certain Add-Ons are disabled. Ignore the warnings.

I know that this might be time consuming - I just happened to get lucky and hit the solution with the first Add-On ...

Hmmm. I had a laptop w/ PC-DOS in the 90’s.

Where IBM missed the boat was when they bought Lotus and had PS2 and didn’t try to compete against Office and Windows very hard. Lotus actually had a much bigger market share than Office. Was a better program too. IBM failed to invest in it and Office and Windows eventually passed them by. Every programmer I worked with liked PS2 better than Windows way back then.
