I need help explaining an odd error message I get each time I check my "pings".
This is the message:
Error establishing an encrypted connection to d189d6a00s48y7.cloudfront.net Error Code: -8155
I am using Redhat Linux and Galeon browser, with Java enabled but Java scripts disabled.
My guess is you need to check your system for a rootkit. I’m not an expert, just an Ubuntu user.
I don’t know about Red Hat but in the Ubuntu repository there is chkrootkit and rkhunter, and I think some others. Note that they are known for false alarms, but it’s a start.
I would think your best bet is to post a question on the Red Hat forums, they would be more familiar with the security packages that come with your distro.
Thanks, this is a new problem. Have been using this machine quite a while. It is not that current, but have never had problems with it.

Amazon has a service called “CloudFront” which has encrypted connections. Google “amazon cloudfront encrypt” and there are a lot of links.
I wouldn’t panic yet, but it wouldn’t hurt to refrain from doing online banking or buying stuff until you’re sure your system isn’t compromised. You might try running Linux off a live CD.
Could be the dreaded FRootkit. Causes extreme rationality and common sense in users. It’s a selective, conservative, elegant virus. :)
Yes, I had found the Amazon use of “cloud.front.net” by searching for the string.
I do not remember using a link to anything on Amazon in a post. But I will look at that again too.
No problem. I do no on-line banking with this machine. I suspect that something I posted or was returned as a comment had that script embedded. Just a guess.
As far as Amazon, I don’t remember anything. But it is possible someone else uses it for hosting.

It looks like a file server. I don’t know what your computer is trying to look up, or if it has something to do with these people.
There are some other links with that address on it.
Again, I’d be cautious until you figure out what’s going on.

Appears to be a known Mozilla problem.
Try a non-Mozilla browser like IE.

No IE on this box. Running Redhat Linux and using Galeon Browser. I think I found the problem. This week I posted a couple of images (of Congressmen) here with an in-line image entry. Not yet sure which one yet, but one must be using cloudfront.net. Thanks for input.
It was not the posting of the congressmen images (in-line link) Was more recent. It might be that speed test thing. I vaguely remember using such a link that did not appear to work and I simply moved away.
Still looking for the critter.

The way it acts when I access that page is exactly like looking at my pings.

found the link causing the error in a response on my ping list.
Once that response overflowed to the 2nd page of my ping list, it no longer generated the browser error pop-up. But if I look back at the older entries on the ping list it still causes the same thing for the page. Don’t suspect it does any damage, but I am always cautious of this type of event.
Have been using Linux for over 10 years. Started with a flavor of Slackware and then migrated to Mandrake and later Redhat. The machine I am using is old, I pulled the hard drive out of my newer Linux box for a friend. (he lost his job and needed it more than I did then) I will be replacing that hard drive and reloading the OS for the newer machine. Have never used Ubuntu but will probably try that when I do.
