"Throughout the auditorium, there was a palpable sense amongst the delegates that we'd nominated the wrong guy"

In 1976, the GOP had just nominated Gerald Ford for the Presidency. The GOP delegates enthusiastically chanted until Ronald Reagan (who had just narrowly lost the race for the Republican nomination) came to the dais and gave an impromptu speech that simply blew everybody away...

Thanks, RR, I am just starting WFB, Jr's book, "The Reagan I knew." It's a good read.

You have a great weekend, too!

This stuff just bums me out.

When you watch someone give a speech that is off the cuff, and it stands head and shoulders above anything, anyone has done since in this scripted, focus-grouped world it is a sad commentary on the state of our leaders.

Well, it was not quite 'off the cuff'. He gave, with a few modifications, the speech he had prepared in the event that he had won. It was very close until the end of voting who would prevail.

Word is, that he was very surprised that he would speak at all after the vote. But given the opportunity, he made the most of it.

I will let you know about Buckley's "The Reagan I Knew," if I am able.
