The media mourned the 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s murder this week. Nobody should be murdered, of course, but why was Lennon raised above the other 2,227 New Yorkers murdered that year? Why is Lennon still held as a god among the cognoscenti with his own Central Park monument? It is well past time to reestablish Lennon as a wholly flawed man who is not a suitable role model for the communist paradise he represents in death.

Lennon was an obnoxious thorougly annoying and unlikeable lefist airheaded jerk in life but he could sing. His talent as a singer could be celebrated but his persona should be left out of the celebration.

Having lived through that era without doing drugs, I have NEVER understood the fascination with the Beatles. I loved their early music but to me they became a bunch of druggies in the late 60’s so I could care less. There were a lot of great musical groups that I liked a lot more than them.
He wasn’t all bad. He donated a good bit of money to the NYPD so they could buy bulletproof vests for the officers.
Lennon was a Beatle and because of the huge fame we tend to elevate status in the culture. We are still gripped over JFK assassination over 47 years ago. Average Joe’s just don’t get the same publicity—just the way it is like it or not.

I got out of the army at the ripe age of almost 20 in 1967 (early out, no sense keeping someone who didn't (want to) re-enlist)
I discovered drugs in the army and black/white politics
Once out, I discovered mini skirts up to here and more sex than any playboy mag could provide.
The Beatles and others were going socio/political and I was ripe for ALL of that.
20 years old, drug conscious (hmmmm ... think about THAT one), sexually active and filled with Viet Nam/anti Viet Nam rhetoric.
I listened to Lennon and others intently and had my brain challenged and picked.
A lot of thought processes that perhaps would never have been started ... were started.
So now I'm a born again 62 year old.
I thoroughly enjoyed those days, and I'm glad I survived and I'm grateful my Savior keeps me saved,
Lennon was part of the trip ... just like the variables here in Freerepublic.

At the time of his death Lennon was making a musical comeback of sorts. There wasn’t that revolutionist tone to his last songs and he was writing some real nice tunes. Chapman should have shot himself and performed a public service good deed.
