Pawlenty is John McCain Jr. The Republicans are assured of a resounding loss in 2012 if they nominate him. He was one of the frontrunner's to be McCain's VP nominee, but would have been crushed as the ticket would have lost all support of the conservative base at that point.

I think to be fair, it would be more accurate to state that McCain supported her - by the act choosing her as his running mate.

In return she has simply and politely maintained her loyalty to a friend.
