Have you recently tried calling someone outside of your local area code only to receive a confusing message about your long distance call not being a local call so you need to contact your carrier or call 305-848-8288? If so, the person or business you are trying to reach is using magicJack. And you are not alone in your woes...

Starting Friday November 12th, problems began to occur when long distance callers received this unexpected recording:

"Please listen to this entire message. Your phone carrier has routed this call improperly. This call is being identified as a local call, and it should be identified as a long distance call. To complete this call, please call your carrier's customer service number. Or dial 305-848-8288, wait for a dial tone, and enter the number you are trying to reach."

...

MagicJack customer service has tried to help disgruntled customers although for the most part the typical response can be summarized like this: "It is not our fault. You must call your carrier. You must tell other people to call their carriers and ask them to reroute the calls." ...

I have it but am not aware of any problems yet. So far (4 months) I have been very happy with it and its only 20 bucks a year.

OKay, there is a resoluton. It took some time to figure it out but obviously none of the cell companies nor Magicjack’s “crack technical talent” time took the time to even think about the problem.

You’re cell phone was originally assigned in a different area code than you now have billing and service provider. In my case, it was a 727 area code and I now lived in area code 540. Anyone I called still saw the call coming from Clearwater Florida.

I got Verizon to assign me a new 540 number for my cell and the problem vanished. A pain in the rear to let all of your contacts know about the new number, but it fixed the problem

I dumped the MJ and got a NetTalk. It hooks directly to my router. I no longer have to leave a computer running and the sound quality is better.
