Isn’t that basically what the Neo-Confederates here say.

Think about this, if the Union were divided, there’s a very good chance we’d be speaking German today, think about it.

Either that or what's now the United States would consist of a couple dozen banana republics continually fighting one another.

Liberals are so amusing. They can't see past their prejudices to the implications of the stupid things they say.

So, if Lincoln doesn't save the Union, then the Confederacy establishes an expansionist state committed to preserving slavery in North America.

I thought liberals were against slavery, but maybe I was wrong.

No, it's actually what BATS (Bigots Against The South) here declare that any southerner who defends their ancestry, traditions , culture, history, Colonel Reb, various historical flags, etc says.

It's called a canard meant to diminish the factual merit when the canard tosser has none of his own.

I have found over the years that most south bashers here have their own skin in the game though few will fess up and that on other cultural issues they more often than not get shown as not so conservative after all in time. More than a few have finally been given the Fresno Flying Carpet route out.

My own views on the Civil War and on race...which is really what it's all about are complicated and jaded. But they are based on experience and observations of half a century I'd be lying to myself to deny.

So I am a proud southerner, passing it on to my children to the delight of anti-southern bigots here and make no apologies and have no remorse. I think we have something the rest of the country envies and that southern whites are proven as the most God fearing and tradition valuing folks in the US and that might explain why Yankees have been moving here in droves lately. Before it was mostly for economic issues but now it seems that many are political refugees.

Thanks.

There is nothing keeping their useless posteriors here. Leave—go somewhere closer to your idea of utopia, please and leave US alone!

...WOULDN‘T IT BE BETTER IF LINCOLN DIDN’T SAVE THE UNION...

Considering that the Federal Government has become the single greatest threat to liberty and prosperity, I'd say yes.

It wasn’t the Civil War, it was the War Against Northern Agression. And it really wasn’t about Slavery as much as it was a war about State’s rights, which is happening today.

The Republican Party was founded to safeguard free labor and prevent the spread of slavery.

For the antebellum South, that was seen as a threat because not being allowed to expand to the West would mean being permanently outvoted by the free states in the Senate. The South would lose the means to protect the “peculiar institution.”

It didn’t really matter that Lincoln had no intention of interfering with slavery. It mattered that he would keep the South from maintaining the position of equality in the Senate to which it believed it was entitled. That alone was enough to lead the South to secede from the Union following his election as President in 1860 and was the proximate cause of the Civil War.

Exactly, I would agree that the South had some legitimate beefs with the Federal government, but still the overriding issue was slavery.

Besides trying to gay up “Spartacus” and “Ben Hur”, Vidal badmouthed Carl Sandburg. He was born rich, has never had any job, and fancies himself a writer. Too bad he’s lived this long. In the 1980s, Pat Buchanan just laughed uproariously when Vidal was on, hmm, must have been Crossfire, and basically insulted Paddy during the interview. Thanks Pacothecat.

I was born in New York, but I agree with him.

The Civl War is why Fed.gov can - on a macro level - tell us how many gallons our toilets can flush, what types of guns we can have, what types of light bulbs we can own, what type of healthcare we must buy etc. etc. etc. The list goes on.

F*** Lincoln. His memorial in Washington ought to be dozed under.

The sectional divisions were worsened by the industrialization of the North while the South remained to a great extent an agrarian economy. There was no way the South could compete with the North and it was unwilling or unable to effect the kind of change necessary to join the 19th Century. And the South would lose in a contest of arms. They were doomed even before they took the drastic step of trying to leave the Union to save a way of life that history had already rendered obsolete.

True, I’m not saying one side was innocent and the other side was guilty.. Both side where guilty, however it all went down to one thing, the South wanted to keep slavery and expand slavery...

And a Confederacy would have needed help from outside to survive even if they won the war, that help would have come with a huge price.

First off, I love your pictures on your profile page. You are very impressive and have a lovely wife and family.

No, it's actually what BATS (Bigots Against The South) here declare that any southerner who defends their ancestry, traditions , culture, history, Colonel Reb, various historical flags, etc says...

The "What if the South had won?" debate is going to go on forever, mainly because the American Civil War will always be a major defining event in our nation's development and history.

"What if the South had won?" and it's variants is such an interesting question - there is no way to know for certain exactly how things would have turned out - everyone seems to be able to have their own views and speculation and opinions and no shyness about sharing them...

But now to the present state of the country...

The brutally honest fact is that there are things which cannot be openly discussed in public concerning culture, crime and race, illegal immigrants, homosexual behavior, etc. that the Southerners - God bless them - are not afriad to say.

And these things need to be said, to be acknowledged and the resulting logical conclusions arising from a brutally honest assessment of the facts used to drive measures to plan for the future.

So the Southerners - being more clearheaded and not having been successfully programmed to ignore and keep silent about the obvious due to political correctness - will be much better prepared to deal with the future - in my humble opinion - than the vast majority of the Northerners.

I just came back a couple days ago from a visit to Kentucky (Natural bridge state park and Winchester KY areas). Was told a lot of Michiganders are moving down there. I for one sure don't plan to stay in Michigan once I retire. Both my wife and I find Kentucky much preferable to "up North" (I know it's not the deep South, but I really don't believe I have what it takes to make it there anyway).

God Bless you people in the South. You are the repository of all that was good in America before the country went to Hell...
