Georgia Banning Undocumented Students From University System (FReep a Poll)

The Georgia Board of Regents has acted to ban undocumented students from attending 5 of the 61 Universities and Technical College Systems of Georgia starting in the fall of 2011.

Georgia And South Carolina Banning Undocumented Students

Georgia thus becomes the second state, after South Caroliina, to try to block undocumented students from attending its universities. The Board is taking this action in spite of the fact that of the 310,000 students in the Georgia system, only 501 are undocumented, and all of these pay out-of-state tuition, which presumably more than covers the cost of their instruction.

The motive driving this decision seems reasonable enough: the Residency Verification Committee wants to make sure that public universities are not being "swamped" by undocumented students, that Georgia taxpayers aren't subsidizing these students through in-state tuition, and that undocumented students aren't stealing spots from native Georgians.

However, none of these seems to be the case here: a mere .16% of Georgia's students are undocumented, and the few that do attend college pay out-of-state tuition. So this would appear to be a poor decision from the Board of Regents.

Undocumented Students Working For The DREAM act

A similar sad tale was related in The New York Times Magazine on Sunday, October 24, in Maggie Jones's brilliant piece, "Coming Out Illegal."

Jones narrates the life of young, undocumented women at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) who risk their lives to stand up for the DREAM act, which would create a legal pathway to residency for immigrants who arrived in this country as children. (See Jessica Pieklo's article here on the status of this bill.) In particular Jones focuses on Leslie, a history major, who at age 6 was brought to the United States by her mother. Leslie was originally told by her high school counselor that as an illegal, she was ineligible for college.

As Jones tells it, "Later in her senior year of high school, Leslie learned that, in fact, she could go to college and that California law AB540 allows undocumented California students to pay in-state rather than out-of-state tuition; California is one of 11 states with such a law."

UCLA Graduates - Nowhere To Go

And what are Leslie's prospects after graduation? She expects to work cleaning houses and waitressing. The reality is that many undocumented graduates are short-order cooks, waitresses, baby-sitters, jobs for which they don't even need a high-school diploma.

Still, at least in California, Leslie can go to college and pay in-state fees. And things could change with the passage of the DREAM act.

Not so in Georgia, where the Board of Regents would like to take away even the opportunity to study at its university, at least in the most selective public colleges.

Shame on them.

Hey! I’ve got an idea! Let’s educate AMERICANS first! While we’re at it, we can stuff Dingy Harry’s DREAM Act up HIS kazoo rather than letting him ram it down our throats.

There is a computerized system called SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) for legal international students. They have to maintain certain criteria to be eligible for enrollment and being in the US. How could these universities not be part of it?

It gets out of hand, all of a sudden they being a constituency and start to demand more and more.

This is the same reason we shouldn’t have allowed the Chinese to buy all those US Bonds.

The poll question is designed to mislead and to get the answer they want, which is yes.

Common sense is generally lacking in the left. Maybe they never heard of the Balkans.

I'm with you. When I went to college, my best friend went to UNC— she had moved to NC a year before and was therefore a NC citizen. Tuition something like $800 a year. I wanted to leave NY and go to school with her but couldn't afford the out of state tuition. How is it fair illegals to the country can pay in state tuition in some states, but I, a U.S. Citizen, couldn't?I'm not saying NC should have paid my tuition, but it's not right that other states pay non- citizens tuition.

No one has ever called me a liberal or softie but I don’t think that any state needs to ban illegals from attending a state university. Why not?

Just declare that illegal alien students are international students, and thereby do not get in-state tuition and cannot qualify for in-state tuition after any number of years of residency.

Also, declare that, for any matriculating student without a student visa, ICE will be called and the student will be deported. In addition, if the address of the student’s parents is on record, and they are living in America, they too will get a visit from ICE.

This will solve the problem without sounding so bloody inhumane.

"What part of **illegal** don't you understand, Judy?"

My thoughts exactly! Who does this Judy think she is telling Georgia what is and isn't right!!

The lottery here in Georgia finances free tuition for any Georgia resident who maintains a B average in High School. That means that Georgia Universities fill up quickly causing many in-state students to be turned down. Why should illegal "criminals" be allowed to take those spots?

Poorly worded lib poll. Let's kick it around!

FREEP THIS POLL ***PING!*** FRmail me if you want to be added or removed from the Fearless Poll-Freeping Freepers Ping list. And be sure to ping me to any polls that need Freepin', if I miss them. (looks like a medium volume list) (gordongekko909, founder of the pinglist, stays on the list until his ghost signs up for the list)

I don’t really care as long as they’re paying OUT of state tuition rates, which probably more than cover the cost of their education and then some. Just so long as they realize that the Dream Act is never passing and once we catch them they’ll never become a citizen.
