9th Congressional District Republican challenger Dick Muri responded to the change in rating by the national political analysts at RealClearPolitics.com, “The national analysts are seeing now what I and everyone working on the ground has seen all along, this district is a center-right district that does not appreciate the big government agenda that Adam Smith been voting for since the Democrats took the majority in 2006.”
Senator Slade Gorton commented on the change of ranking. Gorton said, “This re-affirms my analysis that the 9th Congressional District can realistically be won by a Republican. Dick Muri is well positioned to defeat Smith.”
Chairman of the Washington State Republican Party made the following statement regarding the change to Toss Up, “Dick Muri has recently gained momentum because the voters of the Washington’s 9th Congressional District are responding to his message of less government, lower taxes and real job creation. This is in contrast to Adam Smith who has voted with Nancy Pelosi’s big government agenda 96.6% of the time and has a more liberal voting record then Seattle’s Jim McDermott.”
Smith has attempted to distance himself from his voting record and the failures of the Obama administration by running T.V. advertisements claiming he is an “independent”. In response Muri said, “It’s a shame that our good congressman is running from his record. If he is going to put his name behind legislation then he should stand up for his beliefs, not run from them. This clearly shows he knows his votes were out of line with the centrist views of the 9th District voters.”
Councilmember Muri stands in stark contrast to Congressman Adam Smith. Muri has earned a reputation for pragmatism and bi-partisanship. The News Tribune called him a “pragmatic conservative.” Muri’s record on the Pierce County Council has demonstrated his commitment to a balanced budget, protecting our natural environment and fighting crime.
Dick Muri has been married to his wife, Mary, for 31 years. He is a father of four and grandfather of four, with the latest grandson born last week. Dick is a 22 year veteran of the United States Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1997. Dick was elected to the Steilacoom School Board in 1997, where he served for 6 years before joining the Pierce County Council in 2003 where he currently chairs the Performance Audit Committee and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.
Dick Muri started his campaign for Congress in May of 2009 because of his concern for the direction of the country and he knew he was in a position to make positive changes for the people of the 9th Congressional District.

Just goes to show what hard work on the ground can do. Conservatives who are proactive can win when people get behind them and stop with the bs about how “they can’t win” or “no chance in hell in that district”.
