I think the incident you are thinking of, is when Churchill, a staunch anticommunist and anti-totalitarian, was asked, after the German invasion of Russia, if he could get along with Stalin:

“If Hitler invaded hell I would make at least a favorable reference to the devil in the House of Commons.”
