Err American died because no one wanted to hear their hate. NPR should suffer the same fate. Let the American people choose what they want to support on their own. We need a "Defund It" movement. No more free handouts. It's time they earned their own keep.
There is no reason why they couldn't be sold off like any other business organization at great cost savings to the public. Some left-leaning states such as Vermont may very well decide to buy their local affiliates and keep them operating. Others, like Wyoming, may just let them be sold to Clear Channel or other private entity and enter into a contract with them to broadcast the little bit of essential educational programming which was part of their original mission.
Back when I was in grade school in the LBJ era, the stated purpose for funding NPR was to bring the smaller, poorer and more isolated parts of America the same type of quality, educational programming which was available in the big markets.
Arguably, it may have been a laudatory goal at that time. There were only three broadcast network channels offering programming at that time. The only educational programming I remember were game shows like College Bowl or Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.
Now, there are hundreds of choices. NPR isn't even as good as many alternatives such as Animal Planet, Discovery or History Channel, all of which operate without taxpayer subsidies. The fact that NPR news has become just another "me too" voice in the stable of big government propogandists makes it even more expendable.
