I hate to have to agree with you on that latter, but I am forced to strongly agree based on the way the world works these days, with way too many overzealous cops and prosecutors trying to make names for themselves. This guy explains it really, really well:

Once upon a time we had a neighbor who was a police officer in southern California. He told my father (I evesdropped) never to talk to the police because they’re allowed, by law, to lie to you. So, tell the police you want a lawyer but tell them nothing else, except maybe your name. He said he would follow his own advice.
