Today, European police are searching for suspected terrorist hit teams planning a Mumbai-style attack on lightly protected targets in Europe. Even though no specific targets have been identified, the intelligence community believes Al-Qaeda is likely planning to strike the U.K., France or Germany. The success of the Mumbai attack has emboldened Al-Qaedas associated Haqqani network. U.S. Officials consider the Haqqani to be a proxy of Pakistans Intelligence directorate.
Mumbai, India was attacked on November 26, 2008 by ten terrorist from Pakistan. The attack lasted for three days and killed 164 people. European security officials are reviewing the Mumbai assault as a preventative measure to capture suspected terrorists before they could strike. Intelligence officials speculate the strike team originated in Pakistan and has already entered Europe by way of Iran and Turkey.
Discovery
The plot was revealed by Ahmed Sidiqi, a militant detained in Kabul. When he was turned over to the U.S. Forces he provided details about the terror plot during questioning. Sidiqi, a German citizen of Afghan descent traveled to Afghanistan in 2009 to join the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, an extremist group allied with Al-Qaeda.
