Senator Jim DeMint is shutting down the Senate by vowing to block all legislation that isnt hotlined by tonight. The Senate is set to adjourn on Wednesday or Thursday; typically, a slew of bills that were put off until the end of the legislative session are passed by hotlining, a process in which they are sent out to all senators offices, and if no one complains, they pass by unanimous consent. Other senators have requested that the Senate allow more time for senators to consider the bills; however, DeMint is the only one to actually demand it and hold the whole legislative process hostage. The Senate will not be able to take up the bills again until the lame-duck session after Novembers election.
Plus, Reihan Salam on how his Tea Party cred makes him a serious alternative to Palin in 2012.
Last year, during a conference call with conservative activists, Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina raised the rhetorical stakes of the fight against President Obamas health-reform effort. If we are able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo, a martial analogy that delighted the presidents left-of-center allies as a sure sign of right-wing overreach. At the time, moderate Republicans, and particularly moderate Republicans in swing states that had voted for President Obama in 2008, fretted about Senator DeMints tone, fearing that it was the death-rattle of a political party that was in danger of being reduced to a regional rump.

He’ll be a good VP on the ticket with Palin in 2012.
Pissant...give it up!!!!
Palin and Demint is no rivals, Sarah even said it on Foxnews that she admires and respects Demint and that “more Power to him”
The Daily Beast is no friend to conservatives unless they trash Obama which then is news to us.
I would take either one but I would go with DeMint. She screwed the pooch with me by shilling for Juan McCain.
This man is a true statesman and Palin would make a good Homeland Security director for him.
Ever think they could be allies not rivals? No I didn’t think so.
Good luck with that
If he really wants a shot he will shut down the Senate during the lame duck session. THAT could make him a 2012 front runner.
I can’t count how many times Demint has said NO to a presidential run in ‘12.
These bad boys will be OUTTA TOWN by tomorrow Noon ~ even Hairy Reed.
Why aren't ALL Repubs doing this same thing????
It sure isn't.
There is no rivalry...its just Pissant (Palin hater) and Daily Beast trying to stir up stuff and it’s a slow day in news btw.
I’d be okay with any of the following, in any combination for President/Vice President:
Sarah Palin
Jim DeMint
Lt. Col. Allen West
John Bolton
You WISH they were rivals. They have both done more to elect Conservatives than all the GOP combined.
As I learn more about this DeMint fellow the more I’m starting to like him. He could well be the partys next candidate for Prez in 2012. While I like and admire Palin I think the country and party would be better served if she were to remain in a role of ‘Kingmaker’ and fundraiser and support someone like DeMint.
No one has been elected yet.
I really like DeMint but he is needed in the Senate. I believe he knows that his strength is leading in legislating. Same goes for the effective house members. Stay there and fight because we need their voices and convictions hard at work in the Senate and House.
DeMint said "in Washington is it a radical idea to read a bill and know how much it costs before we agree to pass it. I'm not going to sit by quietly while big spenders try to secretly ram through bills that increase the debt and expand the size of government."
Sounds like the real "rivalry" is between do-nothing McConnell and get-it-done DeMint!
I trust both Palin and DeMint enough to know that neither needs to be president.
