Last week Adrian Humphreys reported for the National Post on allegations that the 'Ndrangheta or Calabrian Mafia had established itself in the greater Toronto area, and today he further reports that Italian investigators believe the crime group may be extending its reach deep into northern Ontario: "Authorities say men from Canada went to Italy to discuss the initiation of 12 new members into the Thunder Bay branch of the 'Ndrangheta the proper name of the Mafia from the Italian region of Calabria and to offer assurances they will now 'do something' after decades of such lethargy that no one seemed to know they existed."
Humphreys further spoke with Nicola Gratteri, the chief anti-Mafia prosecutor in Reggio Calabria, and the mob buster says: "Canada plays an extremely important role in the 'Ndrangheta, and in general, in Mafia activities and actually can be considered a very strategic country. Canada is important because it is a very rich country but also because Canada lacks legislation that can fight the 'Ndrangheta and gang crime in an effective way, since there is no criminalization of membership."
Perhaps it's time that Canada -- and the United States, for that matter -- enact so-called Mafia association laws which would prohibit membership in criminal organizations. In the United States local prosecutors successfully are using civil injunctions to stop street gang members from associating with each other which have been upheld by the courts as constitutional, and this law enforcement tool should be applied to Mafia families.
