While I applaud the GOP leadership for laying out a plan to counter the agenda of President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid - I dont think it is the bold step forward that the 1994 Contract for America was.
The GOP Pledge to America promises to:
Create jobs, end economic uncertainty, and make America more competitive.
Stop out-of-control spending and reduce the size of government.
Repeal and replace the government takeover of healthcare.
A plan to reform Congress and restore trust.
A plan to keep our nation secure at home and abroad.
Checks and balances
At first glance this appears to be right in tune with what the vast majority of Americans have been asking for. However, when you read The Pledge, many of the details are vague and ambiguous or simply do not go far enough to reign in neither the size of government nor the out of control spending Congress has embarked upon the last few years.
The Pledges plan to create jobs, end economic uncertainty, and make America more competitive is simple enough and in line with the conservative traditions of the Republican Party. It calls for a making the Bush tax cuts permanent which will prevent a $3.8 trillion tax hike from taking effect on January 1, 2011. The plan also calls for a new exemption for small businesses to be able to deduct twenty percent of their business income which will give a much-needed infusion of capital for investment and new hiring. Finally, the plan calls for the repeal of the portion of the new health care law that states that small businesses must submit a 1099 to the IRS and the vendor for any purchase over $600. and no one wanted to put their signature on this so called “Hope and Change” theme.
They should never discuss it again.
