Ford. An American Legend!!
And I have never owned one. THAT is going to change
Just what I want, but that damned UAW!
Oh if only they were owned by the government. /s.
OK, so they can make a V6 that runs like a V8...... I just wish they could make one that sounds like a V8.
Of course, some pretty tall highway gears are going to have a lot to do with the the high gas mileage numbers.
Set it up some really appropriate truck gears, (say 3.73 or so) and that will come down. But, if it has good torque at low RPM those tall gears might work for most people.
We'll just have to see. I'm kinda interested in the new V10 in the F250 myself.
Twin turbo? On a Ford? That sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Now this is what car buyers want.
And if a Ford truck owner is approached by a polar bear standing up on his hind legs, he won’t be so stupid as to think that he’s going to get a hug...
So you have a super-low low gear and a super-high high gear.
Big deal. Good luck trying to get the truck up to 70 in a headwind with that high end gear ratio. And I really don’t want my truck shifting out of 1st gear at 4 MPH because it is at the rev point it needs to...
“EcoBoost”???? I hate marketing people.
My F-250 7.3L Powerstroke diesel, with minor tuning changes, actually gets 24 mpg on the highway and 18 mpg carrying a 2400 lb truck camper. No estimation needed.....
Can I drop this 3.7 liter into my Ranger? I am getting ready to roll the odometer over again and I am worried my old 4.0 liter is about to give up the ghost. It has seen some very rough service, but I have never had a problem with it.
I’ve always wished my suburban had an ‘86 Buick 3.8L Turbo motor in it for years. It has WAY more torque the the 6.0L the truck came with and would get 20 mpg instead of 13 mpg. That’s with a 25 year old motor based on a 1960’s motor. Image what GM could do with 25 years of development...Not that CEO Obama would let them, now.
The ecoboost makes 420 lbft stock, but when tweaked, like most turbos can be, it will make over 500lbft, and them more load you put on it, the more torque it makes. Going up a hill with a trailer never has been easier with a gasoline fueled truck.
DEARBORN, Michigan Ford's 2011 Mustang is posting some impressive numbers, both for power and for fuel economy. The EPA has certified the V6-powered pony car at 31 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city for the version with six-speed automatic transmission. The 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine puts out 305 horsepower, making this the first production car ever to pair 30-plus mpg and 300-plus hp, according to Ford.
The Mustang with V6 has a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. With the manual, the car gets 30/19 mpg. The fact that the automatic betters the manual on fuel economy is “a shift in conventional wisdom,” Ford noted.
Well that’s reeeaaal nice, except that numbers don’t tell the whole story. Unless that torque value is available at a nice low RPM, then this is a hot rod, not a pickup. Likewise that HP number; if it’s up at 90% of the max RPMs, then no one will ever see it. Ford made the same mistake a few years back with the Triton V10. Neat engine, but the torque and horsepower peaks were all way above 3000rpm, but the motor was dropped into the SuperDuty line, which was built to spend its life pulling stumps and dragging three-axle horse trailers, of which neither activity involves high rpms.
Why didn’t the put that technology on a high compression V-8. Then they really would have something. Or just use a high compression V=8, or use a turbo charged dieses as is now done in Europe? Inquiring minds would like to know.
Yeah, but will it tow my 10,000 pound 5th wheel??? Just kidding. My 1990 F-250 Diesel does the job. I need a new P.U. though. Too bad I can’t afford one in this economy :-(
Ford has been kickin it lately. The Ford Fusion is a great car, and the Hybrid version kicks the Toyota Camry Hybrids butt.
Impressive! Now, to apply these techniques to the 5.0!
I’m guessing that the 23 mpg is in 2WD form, not 4WD where they usually sacrifice 3-4 MPG due to the additonal mechanical drag and the added weight of the drive train. Still, very impressive. I’m lucky to hit 19 in my short-bed 4WD 2004 Dodge Hemi.
I guess it’s time to do a few modifications to my Hemi. I can’t be letting a V-6 truck out-perform me! :-)
