King Henry VIII opened the door. Without King Henry VIII apostasy, Martin may not have had the impact that he did. If England and Spain had remained in close working relationship, reformation might not have been so divisive.

If there had been no protestant reformation, Europe would probably have remained a backwater, thanks to catholicism’s anti-usury stance, which hampered capitalism and the investment needed for more complex innovations and inventions to flourish...
