I believe the punishment was either to be flogged around the fleet or hanged until dead.

Which always brings up the point in my mind: it is possible to be hanged but not until dead?

Yes. That was part of being “drawn and quartered.” First you were hung until nearly dead, then taken down, have your guts ripped out and set afire(while you’re still alive), and finally, your body cut into four pieces.

Not a great way to spend an evening. Ouch!
