When I see this idea promulgated I imagine a football coach saying, "Let them score all they want in the first half. That way we will get to see all their plays and their strategy and we can adjust and come back in the second half. We'll really be fired up then!"

Sorry but I disagree.
Using your football analogy, I would say it is more like you found out the coach for the opposite team is an impostor, but he's calling one idiotic play after another.
You could expose him for the sham that he is, but they might accidentally replace him with someone better. My response to situation would be, “shh - let him keep doing what he's doing.”
