Coordinators for Shorter University's job fair hope to find jobs for 200 people.

One of the fair coordinators, Britt Madden, was the guest speaker at the Exchange Club meeting Friday.

Scheduled for Sept. 23 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at The Forum in downtown Rome, the fair has 70 vendors lined up.

“Putting people back to work is the only way our economy is going to get back on its feet,” said J.P. Cooper, a club member who invited Madden to speak.

During Madden’s presentation he compared state unemployment statistics for 2000 and 2010. The chart demonstrated rates for each county using different shades of green. The darker the color, the higher the level of unemployment.

This year’s chart was almost completely dark green.

“My doctor friend said it looks like someone who has cancer,” Madden said.

Madden said last year’s job fair helped 105 of the 2,900 people who showed up find jobs.

“We’re wanting to really push our local talent,” Madden said.

The club also discussed that it was able to collect enough to send 23 care packages to Marines in Afghanistan.

According to a news release from the state Department of Labor, Employers, educational institutions, and resource agencies expected to participate in the career fair include:
