I think the story behind the story is that “payback is a biatch”. That is, the Obama’s have made it a point to repeatedly insult our allies, at a personal level.
Things like giving “official gifts”, that look to have been purchased at remainder stores, that on their own right are wildly inappropriate. In fact, there are probably fewer instances when they did something that wasn’t insulting, or just lower class. One example:

What could be hell about having servants, private chefs, chauffers, free vacations all paid for by the people who she scorns?
